Geoengineering is a Controversial Topic on Numerous Levels
The projects and techniques that are introduced in geoengineering research have staggering implication for climatic science, politics and and society. The research available that supports the use of carbon dioxide removal and solar radiation management is spearheaded by a small elite group of scientists who often receive funding from technology gurus like Bill Gates and Sir Richard Branson. This small group has become the lead experts in this field. Their findings suggest that the purposeful alteration of the climate is a legitimate way to combat global climate change. Many argue that the fate of the global climate should not be concentrated in the hands of a few. The effects of climate modification will be felt globally, so every country should be involved in discussions, research and planning. Almost all aspects of the controversy remain unclear. Climatic science has yet to produce a climatic model, or combination of climate models, that accurately depict the behavior of the climate system. Many other scientific projections and findings are easily contested by other studies. The cost of geoengineering techniques are often compared to the cost of other carbon mitigation techniques. The greatest concern about the impacts of geoengineering are the moral dilemmas associated with the practices.
